The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
